Edson Buddle has been named MLS Player of the Week.
Buddle, 28, scored both goals for the L.A. Galaxy in their win on Saturday over Real Salt Lake. The game was the first rematch of the teams since last season’s MLS Cup, which went to Real Salt Lake in penalty kicks.
Buddle has led the Galaxy to a 4-0-0 start and in the process has scored all 7 goals for his team this year. He is the first player in MLS history to score his team’s first 7 goals.
Buddle is making a strong case for himself to possibly be given a chance by Bob Bradley, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. Buddle has only one National Team appearance, and that came back in 2003.
The U.S. could use all the scoring help it could get heading into the World Cup in South Africa in June. Buddle’s start this year and his play last season have earned him that. But Bradley must act quickly. The World Cup is less than 2 months away.
Buddle told MLSsoccer.com, “I’ve always tried to stay level headed…. I’m just enjoying it right now. I’m glad I’m in a good rhythm and just hope I can keep scoring.”
The Galaxy play next Saturday in Kansas City against the Wizards. The U.S. men’s team has a friendly in a World Cup tune-up game on May 25th against the Czech Republic in Connecticut, and then four days later in Philadelphia against Turkey.
Landon Donovan, star of the U.S. National team and star of the L.A. Galaxy, is hoping Edson Buddle will be joining him on the plane from L.A. to South Africa in June.
